Matthew Ajjarapu, voce e tastierista dei The Devonns nel brano Blood Red Blues (Protest Song) ripete più volte What’s going on?, come a fare il verso ad un illustre predecessore, che aveva dedicato un intero album alle sue preoccupazioni e ai suoi dubbi sul futuro. I Devonns si limitano a dedicare un solo splendido brano del loro appassionante esordio a 33 giri alle preoccupazioni sul futuro del nostro pianeta, un brano non solo da ascoltare, ma anche da vivere per la sua delicata intensità.

I wrote this song about my frustration with the lack of progress America has made on issues such as the Trayvon Martin case or the Sandy Hook massacre. It’s like everyone here is mad about those things, but no one actually has any power to change them.  When I wrote it… I had been listening to both Sam Cooke’s and Aretha Franklin’s version of a “A Change is Gonna Come,” as well as “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye. And I remember trying to imagine if Sam Cooke or Marvin Gaye could somehow come back from the dead and see how things had changed in 30 or 40 years, how might they feel? I think they’d probably feel pretty disappointed at a minimum. Mathew Ajjarapu

Ultima scoperta in ordine di tempo della milanese Record Kicks e del suo vulcanico fondatore Nick Pozzoli, il cui fiuto soul non delude mai. Ad ispirare questi Devonns è il soul morbido di Chicago e di artisti come Leroy Hutson, Dramatics e Impressions. Questi quattro ragazzi si rifanno apertamente a quella scena musicale e confezionano un album che sulla sua reale data di uscita potrebbe trarre in inganno non soltanto i neofiti. Ad aiutarli ci sono due personaggi sensibili e capaci come Paul Von Mertens alla produzione, mentre alle chitarre, percussioni e organo provvede Ken Stringfellow, noto per i trascorsi con i REM e le sue svariate liaisons con l’Italia.
