Di cofanetti che rendono omaggio a qualche grande del passato ne sono usciti molti, alcuni di livello assoluto altri assolutamente dimenticabili. Day Of The Dead appartiene alla prima categoria: intanto esce per la 4AD, che da sola è garanzia di qualità, poi è il frutto di un lungo e appassionato lavoro di ricerca svolto da Aaron e Brice Dessner dei National, che fin dall’infanzia hanno condiviso la passione per la musica dei Dead. La raccolta è monumentale: 59 tracce su cinque cd raccolte nel corso di quattro anni, in molte delle quali compare la house band formata dai National al completo, Josh Kaufman e Sam Cohen. Ma il livello degli artisti coinvolti è eccezionale: da Bonnie Prince Billy a Cass McCombs, da Tim Hecker a Lucinda Williams, dai War On Drugs a Jim James, dai Wilco (con Bob Weir) ai Flaming Lips, da Steven Malkmus a Bill Callahan, dai Fucked Up ai Real Estate, da Orchestra Baobab a Hiss Golden Messenger. Oltre alle eccellenti qualità musicali, questo disco si propone di donare tutti i proventi alla Red Hot Organization, non nuova a queste iniziative (il precedente Dark Was The Night andrebbe senz’altro recuperato) per raccogliere fondi per combattere l’Aids. Sono quindi molti i motivi per portarsi a casa un pezzo della storia della musica americana suonata da molti dei nostri artisti preferiti. Una raccolta straordinaria.
